Abstract - Fencing in ancient Poland
The author presents the history of side arms in Poland from the medieval heavy, double-edged straight sword (the same as in Western Europe) to light single-edged curved sabre of Eastern origin. He also discusses the characteristics of Polish way of fencing with cross cuts mainly on the torso and the head. Poland has long and rich fencing tradition with such great names as Władysław Biały, the prince of Silesia, Zawisza Czarny and Samuel Zborowski, who, apart from their unique skills, were examples of bravery, nobility and patriotism. Famous past should be an inspiration for contemporary fencers.
