Abstract - The origins of Coubertain's idea
In this article author underline, that Coubertin was a fully independent activist, a visionary, connoisseur of cultures and a social theorist. Although his projects of social reforms were a result of realisation of the need to learn, still, that learning has never been accompanied by any systematic and sustainable research or profound theoretical reasoning. Nevertheless, his social visions derived from substantial knowledge about different cultures, pedagogical systems, sporting traditions and lifestyles. They have underlain the education reform project, the idea of olympism and the international sport movement.
Through reactivating the olympic games in the modern, international and intercontinental version, Pierre de Coubertin resisted the almost already common opinion, which prevailed among the contemporary humanists and Hellenophiles, that the ancient Greek games could not be repeated as they had been associated exclusively with the nature and culture of the Greeks of those times.
