Abstract - 1st International Congress on Science and Technology in Fencing, BARCELONA 15–17 February 2008
Background. The technological developments visible in fencing over the last 20 years became the main reason to organize 1st International Congress on Science and Technology in Fencing. Moreover, changes in techniques and training methods created new requirements in the process of preparation according to contemporary challenges addressed to the science environments and practicing fencers.
Scientific fields. The combat sports, as a top-class social phenomenon, have generated the interest of different applied sciences from multiple perspectives such as: the prevention or recuperation from injuries, training optimization, the analysis of sociological aspects, improvement in the methodological processes, research into energy expenditure or the brain's response to the stimuli.
Material and Devices. In most of research the scientific material was gained among athletes representing the range from the initial stage to the master level of sport advancement. Sportsmen represented combat sports particularly fencing and karate in minority. Telemetric oxygen uptake analyzer, electroencephalography, surface electromyography, tensiomiography, posture analysis platform and sport performance simulators were applied as the dominant devices to the scientific procedures.
Practical application. One of the congress conception was to join practical and theoretical approach. During the congress Women Epee World Cup took place which was treated as the qualification to the Olympic Games in Beijng. The sport event created an occasion for coaches and competitors to participate in the debate. Additionally, the congress schedule included the organization of workshop with participation of the top epee fencers conducted by their master, Daniel Levavasseur.
