Abstract - Anxiety trait, anxiety state, apprehension, fear, panic and competitors’ psychological resistance

In the previous article (Scientific Year’s Issue-“Ido-Movement for Culture”, vol.9), the author discussed the meaning of emotions in sporting activity. He emphasized the significance of emotional psychology, which was undervalued for a long time. On the other hand, the kinds of psychology appreciated to a somewhat exaggerated degree-were behavioral and depth psychology. Cognitive psychology, emotional and social psychology were not appreciated enough. In relation to the above mentioned article about emotions, the author describes here ‘abolishing’ false views that all the aspects of fear and anxiety act in the same way as the level of excitement and motivation, according to Yerkes-Dodson laws. The author shows that the physiological dimension of fear influences the athlete in the same way as the level of excitement in accordance with Yerkes-Dodson theory. Although the cognitive dimension of fear acts negatively on the activity quality of the athlete: the more the athlete experiences fear, the worse the quality and efficiency of his actions. That is why it is important to develop in an athlete psychical immunity to difficult situations and stress.
