Abstract - Social and Cultural Competencies of Sikaran

Background. Sikaran is a traditional Filipino martial art that is native to Baras, Rizal; it has had formal recognition since the Sikaran Martial Arts Act of 2009 [Republic Act No. 9850]. It represents more than simply the techniques associated with it, but is an example of a form of cultural heritage which can influence the way people view culture and contribute to social development as they interact with it.
Problem and Aim. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of Sikaran practitioners as to whether there is a relationship between cultural competency and social competency within the local community.
Methodology. A descriptive-correlation methodology was utilized for this study. A paper-based survey instrument was administered to adult residents in Baras, Rizal (N = 100) aged 18 to 65. Cultural competency was assessed via the Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts Scale (CAMAS) created by Malmo and Moiseichik [2017]; while social competency was evaluated utilizing the Perceived Social Competence Scale by Anderson-Butcher and Fink [2007].
Results and Discussion. Results and Discussion. Results indicated that participants reported “moderate” on being socially and culturally competent, with stronger responses in areas of cultural sensitivity and awareness rather than of cultural knowledge. Correlation analysis indicated a very strong, positive relationship existed between social competency and cultural competency, indicating that people who believe they have high social capability, may also be more likely to recognize the cultural elements of Sikaran.
Conclusion/Recommendation. Overall, this study suggests that Sikaran has great potential for promoting cultural appreciation and positive social interactions in communities. Future studies could benefit from the use of qualitative methodologies, such as interviews or ethnographic observations, to better understand how Sikaran influences community life and cultural identity. Moreover, strengthening educational and community-based programs to continue the awareness and preservation of Sikaran will help to protect and promote this aspect of Filipino cultural heritage.
