Abstract - Martial Arts for Young People? A Review of the Benefits and Outcomes of Children’s and Adolescents’ Participation in Martial Arts
Introduction. Martial arts are among the most popular participation activities for youth worldwide. This study analyses evidence regarding the impact of martial arts on children and adolescents, integrating findings from psychology, education, sports science, and cognate fields.
Objective. This review evaluates the impact of martial arts on physical fitness, emotional stability, cognitive skills, and prosocial behaviour of children and adolescents.
Method. A narrative review of published literature was undertaken to evaluate the physical, psycho-social, and cognitive outcomes of martial arts participation.
Results. The findings indicated a broad spectrum of positive outcomes, including improvements in strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health, and weight management, along with enhanced self-esteem, emotional regulation, and reduced aggression. An additional finding is the pivotal role of the martial arts teacher in realising these outcomes.
Conclusions. Despite methodological heterogeneity and more generic limitations, martial arts show significant potential as efficacious interventions supporting overall child development, although further research is needed to personalise training approaches.
