Abstract - Effectiveness of technical activities used by athletes in Greco-Roman style wrestling
Introduction. In modern wrestling, the effectiveness of a sporting match depends on a number of factors complementing each other. Achieving success in a match appears to require the optimal level of all these factors. The aim of this research is to analyse the effectiveness of tournament matches of athletes competing in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Research material and methods. A total of 469 matches were examined, of which 257 were played during the World Cup (WC) 2019 tournament and 212 during the Olympic Games (OG) 2020 tournament. During the WC 2019, 221 wrestlers were admitted to the competition, representing 64 different countries. During the OG, 97 wrestlers were admitted to the competition.
Study results. The effectiveness of the technical actions of the athletes claiming victory during the WC matches ranged from 56.9% in the 87 kg category to 70.6% in the 60 kg category. In contrast, the efficiency of athletes claiming victory during the OG ranged from 56.75% in the 60 kg category to 79.46% in the 77 kg category. The difference in performance between winning and losing athletes was significant at the p<0.005 level in all six weight categories in the WC tournament.
Conclusions. Greco-Roman style wrestling shows variation in the effectiveness of the technical actions taken depending on the weight category groups. However, during the OG, heavyweight category wrestlers obtained higher action efficiency values in the parterre position. The analysis of sports combat (structure, dynamics, effectiveness) remains in close relation to the phenomenon of effective necessary defence (including self-defence).
