Abstract - About the art of fencing. Remarks on classical fencing

The author presents the review article on the ground of doctor Maciej Łuczak’s monograph. He pays attention to forms of fencing of Japanese origin practiced in Poland. It is about the supplementation of historical factography on this subject. Fencing is shown as martial art, and not only combat sport. Traditional fencing has always been martial art both in the countries of Far East, and in Europe. The state of the knowledge about Chinese and Japanese fencing needs to be supplemented. Most of the article is devoted to those two forms. The methods of technique and tactics of fight were introduced as well as the methods of training; masters’ surnames and styles practiced by them were given. Classical kenjutsu is described mainly according to the teaching of Katori Shintō-ryū school.
